EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
