The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
