Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions sought a court injunction to prevent the government from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse limits the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier stated. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
